Goodbye West Side, Hello East Side
We just moved to Eagle Rock from Miracle Mile after living there for nearly 10 years. We were thrilled to escape the traffic jams, the tourists and all the annoying, Hollywood wannabes. The real reason we moved, however, is that we wanted to buy a house and we couldn't afford to live on that side of town anymore. Many of our friends reacted to our urban shift as though we were moving to another state. We admit to being well entrenched in all of the West Side's comforts, however we have looked at our 12 mile migration as an adventure.
Let's get real though! We really ARE only 25 minutes away from our old apartment building. Still, for us, it was a big change especially as we love to eat out A LOT. And there were some great restaurants on the West Side which we frequented quite often and will miss very much.
But, now, we are discovering some great new places on the East Side. And, by East Side, I mean Eagle Rock, Highland Park, Mt. Washington, Glassell Park, Atwater Village, Silverlake, Echo Park, Pasadena, South Pasadena, Boyle Heights, and other sleepy locales this side of the San Gabriel Valley. I hope this will maybe serve as a guide to those folks out there who are currently paying over $2500 a month in rent in Santa Monica when they could just move over here, buy a home and pay the same or less in a mortgage. The ocean is over rated. The East Side is cool.

WOW.
That's the first time I have ever heard of Miracle Mile being referred to as the "East Side"! The times they are a' changin' I suppose.
I think the history of LA in last 20 years goes something like this:
1987: You don't want to live anywhere east of La Cinega.
1990 You don't want to live anywhere east of Fairfax.
1993 You don't want to live anywhere east of La Brea.
1995 You don't want to live anywhere east of Highland.
1998 You don't want to live anywhere east of Vine.
2001 You don't want to live anywhere east of Western.
2005 You don't want to live anywhere West of the 5??!
Your food blog is an inspiration to this food/drink geek. Brain's blog has gone too long without update! Consider yourself blogrolled.

You have a great food blog, but as a 4th generation native Angeleno, please please please do not call the Silverlake area "Eastside". If it is west of downtown, it is most definitely not Eastside.
Now c'mon. We all know that Hollywood is the center of the Universe (not downtown). Everything east of Vermont is fair game.
You must not be a native Angeleno, if so you would know that Western Ave and Eastern Ave are exactly 10 miles from each other. Guess what is in the middle -- downtown! Los Angeles originated at Olvera Street and regardless of what any clueless East Coast or Midwest transplants to the westside may proclaim, that is the center of LA County.
thanks for giving Eagle Rock the props it deserves. It's a great community, with great people, great restaurants, shops. It's picking up and gaining its own uniqueness and style. Now, if we can only rally thee PO PO to get the random winos and drunks from walking around like zombies and rid of the wanna bee gangbangers that cruise around from neighboring cities... Eagle Rock would be even better. Thanks again for your reviews... I agree with you 100%!!! Keep posting!!!
GO HOME WESTSIDERS!!!!!!!!
haha. you're hilarious.
Searching for a mexican restaurant review, I found your blog - and had to laugh at this page!
Nine years ago we moved from an apartment at Pico/Robertson to a house right by Eagle Rock and we got the same reaction you did. One friend even said we'd never see her again - because we'd moved to East Bumf-ck. Fast forward and now Eagle Rock is the "new" Silverlake, we have far too many cool places to eat - and the friend who said she'd never come over? Now has multiple friends here. Ah, sweet sweet revenge : )
