Fatty's and Co.

I have to admit that the idea of a vegetarian restaurant doesn't excite me. Everytime my wife suggests "let's go to Fatty's", I whine and groan about it all the way up until the food arrives at my table. I then spend the rest of the evening apologizing to her while I greedily devour everything on my plate. Every dish on the Fatty's (1627 Colorado Blvd.) menu is so carefully designed and thought out that I imagine the kitchen to be an experimental laboratory where a clever chef conducts research on elaborate taste combinations. How else would you arrive at the idea of throwing corn kernels into an omelette or creating a scrumptious sloppy joe sandwich out of vegetables. Add to this a sensible selection of fantastic wine, and you've got one of the most unique restaurant experiences in all of Los Angeles. The Fondue and the Pizza's are delightful, but for a real treat, stop by for brunch on the weekend and try one of the three items on the menu. yes that's right...they have only 3 things on the menu for brunch. But, if you try the omelette, you will never want for anything else again. How could I go to Fatty's and NOT have the omelette. It just ain't gonna happen! I am still stupefied by the veggie bacon. It looks like bacon, it smells like bacon, it almost tastes like bacon....but it's not bacon. The kitchen seems pretty big back there. I'm sure the chef needs all that room to imagine and design all these visionary dishes. For some of the finest gourmet vegetarian food, come down to Fatty's. Call ahead and make sure they are open. They keep some strange hours.

Yeah, Fatty's is never opened when I'm over there. On one occasion, back in the day, I bought a magazine and an Arnold Palmer. Fatty's did not disappoint. (la.foodblogging brought me here)

Is it me or does anyone else get horrible service from "Kim", who I told is one of the owners at Fatty's.

Sure the food is not bad- but everytime I take a friend to eat there we get major attitude for regular requests- ie: warm food a decent cup of tea.

My hubbie and I refer to the Fatty's owners as the Veggie Nazi's (a la Seinfelds Soup Nazi). If you have ever been you will understand the description. These people know what they will and won't put up with and won't hesitate to refuse service or hurry you up (if you just want to order dessert) or if they think you are taking to long at a table when they are busy.

That being said we still go about once a month. I guess once you are used to the abuse it isn't so bad. Almost like going to philly for the first time?? ;-)

I went there and had a really nice waiter. We were not rushed and he was attentive without being pushy. The food was amazing and the wine list is quite good. Its too bad this place keeps getting slammed because Eagle Rock really needs unique dining places like this. Do the people who write these reviews ever eat on the Westside? You haven't seen rude service until you have eaten in say Santa Monica or Venice where its all part of the see and be seen attitude. Sure, Eagle rockians tend to be quirky but my goodness give these businesses a chance to come into their own.

I've never been pushed around at Fatty's, and as a vegetarian consumer, it's one of my favorite restaurants to eat at when visiting California. One of the owners is very nice and always comes to talk to us, asking about the food and suggesting a wine. We've never been pushed out of there or mistreated, and have always had great service. I don't know when these other people are getting neglected, since I never have.

While the food is quite good for a vegetarian place, the owners are truly nuts. They don't care at all about customer service -- the whole place seems to be one big ego trip for artist/owner Kim. As an example, I was served something I didn't order. The server, a nice enough young guy, apologized profusely and asked the manager/owner if she would remove it from our bill. She REFUSED and forced us to pay for something we never wanted in the first place. I will never go back.

Will never ever go there again. Was abused by one of the owners or chef's recently. The help called her Oatie. She made a scene because my food was inedible. It was not sofrito but burned. I don't agree that all their food is well designed. This dish was not by any means and I returned it only to end up almost getting my ass kicked by some crazy lady in a bandana. I'm the freaking customer, I pay the bill. Not good CRM. Don't recommend this place at all. Avoid it. I'd rather eat lousy food and pay for great service.

We eat at Fattys regularly and are comfortable with the crazy, eccentric temperment of the owners. At least they now have a very nice manager taking care of guests. Alot of music we love is also made and performed by crazy artists - it comes with the territory, I guess.

Yes. The food is fantastic and the concoctions are genius. I worked at Fatty's briefly, a job which swiftly ended when I was screamed at hysterically by Kim for no apparent reason. They are definitely whooo, but time softens that, and now I only wish I'd paid more attention to the recipes :D

Fatty's is a pretty messed up place. I know cause I was once an insider, I'll leave it at that. The owners do not care about the customer at all. They are self-proclaimed people haters which is part of why they are vegetarians. The food is pretty good, but not good enough to put up with the completely whack attitude and horrible customer service. Order out?
