La Cabanita

It's quite possible that the best Mexican restaurant in all of Los Angeles is located in Montrose. Our fave foodie friends introduced us to La Cabanita (3447 N Verdugo Rd.) last week and we were quite impressed. I dare someone to find a better chicken mole dish in all of Southern California. It was divine as were the chile rellenos which were tasty, declious and not too heavy. The atmosphere is a little on the bright side and the bar doesn't feel like somewhere you want to have to wait for a table, but the food is world class, home cooked Mexican food. After eating here, I wondered when I was going to get the chance to come back.

I guess this place is technically in Glendale, but it's so close the Montrose border, it feels like Montrose. Note: The maragaritas are lethal especially when you get a double shot of tequila. Careful not to have too many... It's a long cab ride back down the 2 freeway.

hey all...I went here again yesterday...I have to say that the food here is amazing. Even though the service is unbelievably bad, the chicken mole is unbelievably good. how 'bout that.

I wholeheartedly agree. I've had great service, but what cracks me up is how antiseptic the place looks -- almost like a yuppish Chipolte or something. And yet the food is definately mom&pop. I had meatballs last night with boiled egg in the center in this lick-the-plate sauce. Wow.

La Cabanita has been a family favorite for 18 years. They charged just a $1 for their tacos when they first opened! Sure, its not the slickest place in looks or service, but their food is utterly sublime. Try their chuletas, chiles a la cabanita, or the taco de rajas con crema- they are amazing and once you have them you will have trouble ordering anything else there!

Thank you Dave for bringing to light this little gem. One dish I did not see a comment on is the Fajitas. I've tried the Chicken and the Steak both are awesome but the Steak is UNBELIEVABLY good. Just mouth watering even to think about it, but words aren't enough you HAVE to try it!
